Democratic Republic of Congo


The Republic of Congo is home to 3,683,182 citizens. The population is growing at an annual rate of 2.7%. 50.4% of the population is female. 32% of the population lives in an urban environment. Urbanization of the Congo is increasing at an annual rate of 5.1%. The Gross National Product (GNP) is 6.89 billion dollars per year. The Purchasing power (PPP) of the nation is 11.19 billions dollars annually.

Life Expectancy

The life expectancy of a person living in the Congo is roughly 44 years. For every 1,000 babies born, 126 do not live through infancy and 128.2 do not survive until 5 years old. Currently, 51 million people living in the Congo are surviving without access to clean drinking water. 15% of the population is considered to be malnourished.

Marriage and Birth

Though the law states that girls must be 18 to marry and boys must be 21, younger illegal marriages are very common. 56% of Congolese girls between the ages of 15 and 19 years old are married, divorced or widowed. The average Congolese woman gives birth to 6.7 children during her lifetime. For every 1,000 women between the ages of 15 and 19, 124 have already given birth. For every 100,000 live births, 990 mothers do not survive.


Only 78.4% of adult females living in the Congo are literate. The average female attends primary and secondary school for 10 years while males attend for 11 years on average. Tertiary school statistics were unavailable.

Women in Government

Many groups are working in the Congo to encourage equal governmental representation of men and women in the Congo, but currently there are only 3 women in the national cabinet.
